Baton Rouge literally means "redstick," but visitors to our city know that Baton Rouge means Old South beauty, Creole culture, Cajun zest,colorful politics and an all-around good time.

With the many cultures contributing to the cuisine in Baton Rouge ,
there is a blend of Creole and Cajun mixed in with Italian, German, Spanish, Caribbean and Greek influences.

While driving around Baton Rouge , you are sure to notice the large balconies and many doors that adorn the homes. This is a mixture of African American and Caribbean influences.

While down here in the South, you are sure to hear people convert
to and from French in their everyday conversations. There are words such as Cher , a term of endearment; envie, which is a longing for something, usually food in the South; and of course beignets, cafe au lait, and etouffe, which you are sure to hear while visiting Baton Rouge.

Baton Rouge’s rich cultural tradition can be seen in its unique attractions, heard in its Zydeco, Blues and Cajun music, and tasted in its blend of Creole, African American, French and Spanish cuisine.
Baton Rouge is truly the center of Louisiana ’s cultural excitement.

No trip would be complete without experiencing the picturesque ride along River Road out to one of the Baton Rouge Area's numerous antebellum homes. Spend the day exploring Nottoway , Oak Alley, Houmas House, Magnolia Mound, The Myrtles or one of the many other beautiful and mysterious plantations in the Baton Rouge area.

From every direction, everything uniquely Louisiana culminates in the state’s capital city. Experience the downtown renaissance at the Shaw Center for the Arts with theatrical performances, art galleries, fine dining and more. Get a bird’s eye view of the city from the observation deck of the 34-story State Capitol, and then walk right across the street to visit the brand new Louisiana State Museum . And while you’re downtown, dive into the colorful history of Louisiana politics at the Old State Capitol and the Old Governor’s Mansion, built by legendary Governor Huey P. Long.

Sports Teams and Events



Baton Rouge is home of Louisiana State University. LSU is a member of
the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) and the
Southeastern Conference. It fields teams in 20 varsity sports (9 men's,
11 women's). Its official team nickname is the Tigers; and Lady Tigers
for women's teams that have a male counterpart (the term "Bayou Bengals" is also heard at times, but not officially recognized), and its school colors are purple and gold.

LSU's mascot refers to its Confederate heritage, drawing from the fame of two Louisiana brigades whose fierce fighting earned them the nickname "the Louisiana Tigers." Based on winning percentage, the
University's athletics program is consistently one of the best in the
nation.

LSU Tigers football began in 1893, with national championship wins in
the 1958, 2003, and 2007 seasons. They won the 2007 BCS National
Championship 38-24 over the Ohio State Buckeyes, making them the
first team to win two BCS titles.

The LSU Tigers football team, a.k.a. "the Bayou Bengals", represents Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, United States in NCAA Division I FBS college football. Current head coach Les Miles has led the team since 2005. LSU entered the 2007 season with 680 victories, the 12th most in NCAA history, and the 4th most of any
SEC team, behind only Alabama (784), Tennessee (762),
and Georgia (704).

The LSU Tigers basketball team represents Louisiana State University
in NCAA Division I men's college basketball. Women's teams and athletes
at LSU are known as Lady Tigers. The team is currently coached by Butch Pierre (interim) and has enjoyed recent success, including a Final Four run in the 2005-2006 season.

Past coaches include John Brady, Press Maravich, Dale Brown and Harry Rabenhorst. They play their home games in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center located on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The team participates in the West division of the Southeastern Conference.

The LSU Lady Tigers basketball team represents Louisiana State
University in NCAA Division I women's college basketball. The team
is currently coached by Hall-of-Famer Van Chancellor and has enjoyed recent success, including five straight Final Four trips in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Past coaches include Barbara Swanner, Jinks Coleman, Hall-of-Famer Sue Gunter, and Pokey Chatman. They play their home games in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center located on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The LSU baseball team represents Louisiana State University in NCAA
Division I college baseball.Along with the other LSU athletic teams, the
baseball team participates in the West division of the Southeastern Conference. Since 1986, LSU Baseball has been considered an elite
program in college baseball, winning 5 national championships (1991,
1993, 1996, 1997, and 2000) and making 13 College World Series
appearances.

The Tigers play their home games on LSU's campus in Alex Box Stadium, and are currently coached by head coach Paul Mainieri. LSU is currently building a new baseball stadium which will open for the 2009 season.

Seventy years of history at Alex Box Stadium ended on Monday night, june 9, 2008 at 10:01 p.m. -- and the next era will start on in Omaha. LSU's rapid ascent back to the top of college baseball continued with an NCAA Super Regional thumping of UC Irvine, 21-7, to advance to the NCAA College World Series for the 14th time.

LSU Athletics is represented by its mascot, a Bengal tiger named
Mike the Tiger
. The tiger was named after Mike Chambers, LSU's
athletic trainer in 1936,when Mike I was bought for $750 from the Little
Rock (Ark.) Zoo. Mike I was introduced on October 21, 1936. Mike V
reigned from 1990-2007. It was announced in March 2007 that Mike V
had entered into the first stage of retirement. He remained housed in
his on-campus habitat until his death due to kidney failure on May
18, 2007 at age 17.

The latest in the line is two years old, weighs 300 pounds and was acquired from an Indiana big-cat sanctuary. Previously known as Roscoe, "Mike VI" is a Bengal-Siberian mix and was officially named Mike on September 8th, 2007. He was introduced to fans at the home game against Florida on October 6th 2007.

LSU's arenas include Tiger Stadium (football, also known as "Death Valley"), Pete Maravich Assembly Center (basketball, volleyball, and gymnastics, also known as the PMAC), Carl Maddox Fieldhouse (indoor track), Bernie Moore Stadium (outdoor track), Tiger Park(softball), and Alex Box Stadium (baseball).

Tiger Stadium, nicknamed "Death Valley" for its excruciating levels of
sound, the stadium is legendary for the crowd noise generated by fans.
It is the sixth largest college football stadium in the nation and third largest stadium in the SEC, holding 92,400 fans.

The Tiger Stadium atmosphere is generally considered one of the loudest and most electrifying college football experiences in the country. During
a nationally televised game against Auburn in 2003, ESPN recorded a noise level of 117 decibels at certain points in the game. In 2007 when the No. 1 ranked Tigers played the No. 9 ranked Florida Gators, the noise level registered at 122 decibels when the Tigers made a come-from-behind win in the final minutes of the game.

Baton Rouge is also home to Southern University and A&M College,
one of the best-known historically black colleges and universities in the
United States. Southern is located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The concept of Southern University was put forth by P. B. S. Pinchback, T. T. Allain, and Henry Demas as an institution "for the education of
persons of color" at the 1879 Louisiana State Constitutional Convention.

The Southern Jaguars represent Southern University in NCAA intercollegiate athletics.Southern University's athletic teams participate in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) which is a part of the NCAA Division I. Football participates in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA). Southern University's colors are columbia blue and gold and their mascot is the Jaguar.

Every Thanksgiving weekend, Southern plays its archrival Grambling
Tigers in the annual Bayou Classic at the Louisiana Superdome in New
Orleans; the game is telecast on NBC.

Often accompanying the SU athletic teams is the Southern University Human Jukebox, one of the top marching bands in the nation, with a
rich tradition of entertaining millions of fans every year with their precision drills and powerful sound. The Human Jukebox has performed
at several Super Bowls, Yankee Stadium, foreign countries, Bowl games,
Presidential Inaugurations, Radio City Music Hall, and television commercials and music videos, just to name a few
